Information for IACT20 participants

Are you looking to kickstart your entrepreneurial journey? InnovationACT provides you with the skills, tools and networks to make that happen, with support from a range of experts from the community.

Over two months, IACT teams will:

  • Participate in intensive online workshops that will teach to to conceive, develop and validate an innovative business idea
  • Learn from key players in the startup community through online expert seminars;
  • Be mentored by local entrepreneurs and businesspeople;
  • Get exposed to the other initiatives and support programs available to you beyond IACT; and
  • And the top teams will have the chance to pitch their ideas for a share of the $50,000 grant pool and other startup support.

Registrations for IACT20 closed at 11:59pm, 21st August 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s IACT program will be delivered online.

Frequently asked questions about participating in IACT

IACT20 is open to current students of ANU. Individuals must participate in the program in teams of 2-5 people, of your choosing.

All participants must register for the IACT20 program by 11:59pm 21/08/20, via the form here.

If you are not an ANU student but would like to participate in IACT20, you can apply for a limited Wildcard place in the program.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have adapted this year’s program to be run online (via Zoom and Slack). This means that students who are not currently located in Canberra can still take part.

IACT20 teams must be made up of two to five people.

Each team can only have a maximum of one Wildcard participant.

You can register for IACT20 even if you haven’t yet found your team. Once your registration has been approved, you will be invited to join the IACT20 Slack workspace, where you can meet other participants and seek out team members.

We will also be holding a virtual team hunt event for registered participants on 18th August, where you can meet other participants over Zoom. 

You just need to finalise your team by 21/08/20 in order for your team to be eligible.

No, you are welcome to participate in IACT20 even if you haven’t yet come up with an appropriate idea, though we encourage you to have a think about types of global/business problems that you may be passionate about solving.

The IACT team will support you through the process of conceiving, developing and validating an idea. 

IACT welcomes ideas from all disciplines, from mobile apps, to research, to social enterprises, as long as they are not offensive, discriminatory or misleading.

IACT is best suited to ideas that are in the early stages, i.e. ones that are still requiring market validation and significant development.

If your idea is for a startup that has already launched, please only participate in IACT if you feel you have more to improve on your business model and are willing to accept new feedback and ideas.

No IACT events are compulsory, but we find that participants tend to get more out of the program the more they put in. We recommend, as a minimum:

  • Attending as many virtual IACT events as possible, particularly Workshops as these form the core structure of the educational component of IACT, and
  • Allowing an hour or two per week to work with your team on exercises and activites from the week

If you are unable to attend one or more IACT events, try to make sure at least one or two people from your team can attend and can pass the information back onto the rest of the team. However, IACT events are most effective when the majority of the group can attend and can work on exercises together.

We will be recording our virtual events, and making the recordings, presentation slides and other workshop materials available after events, but please note that IACT events are designed around live participation, so may not be as effective when viewing the recordings.

Eligible teams will be in the running for a share of the $50,000 grant pool, however grant funding is not guaranteed. The grant pool will be shared between a minimum of five and a maximum of ten teams.

A range of in-kind startup support, such as free business consultations, will also be made available to IACT20 participants. More details on startup support will provided throughout the program.

All participants will also have access to support through mentors, program alumni and other experts.

The IACT program will also expose you to other programs, initiatives and networks available to you beyond the IACT program.
