Venture Concept Overview

An opportunity exists in the sustainable transport sector, as electric vehicles currently available on the market are expensive and limited by function and style.

We provide unique electric vehicles to suit individual customer needs by re-using conventional vehicles and converting them to electric. This conversion process reduces environmental impact from scrapping old vehicles and manufacturing new ones, and enables us to provide a larger range of sustainable transport alternatives than currently available on the market. This process also provides us with the flexibility to cater for our individual customer’s functional, financial, style and performance requirements.

Our primary customer segments include the environmentally conscious, financially conscious, and specific/unique vehicle owners. We have engaged with over 50 individuals and organisations identifying with one or more of these segments and received overall support and interest from prospective customers. It was highlighted that increased education around our solution was required to receive full commitment from customers. We aim to provide this through the development of a prototype for demonstrations, and the implementation of a marketing strategy focused on education.

We are Tom Creek and Dan Clements; electrical engineers with experience in emerging technology, specifically electric vehicles, in both a technical and project management capacity. We have in-depth knowledge of electrical systems, automotive applications and business acumen, positioning us well to deliver value through this venture. We have developed valuable industry and supplier contacts providing us with reliable materials and facilitating our venture’s services and product development. We have an established mutual beneficial agreement enabling us to enhance our value proposition with the provision of reduced cost charging infrastructure to our customers.

We have secured access to additional avenues for marketing, promotion and educational workshops to target our solution at our primary customer segments.

We have developed detailed designs, models, and costings for a range of services and products. The venture is in its initial stage and we are working to develop a functioning prototype to demonstrate our capability and vision. We are preparing to launch our website and social media platforms to establish our existence in the market.

With the initial establishment of our venture in the ACT region, we see an opportunity to expand to a national market. There will be continuous development and refinement of products and services offered as the customer’s requirements evolve. As the venture expands we will have an increased focus on premium vehicles. Our ancillary services can also to expand to complementary industries. We are seeking to obtain a minimum amount of $7,000 from the IACT17 Seed Pool. This will cover the associated administration costs of setting up our venture, the cost required to build our prototype and the cost of implementing a basic marketing strategy for promotion and education.

Receiving additional funds beyond this minimum will be used to enhance our marketing strategy to increase our customer reach, develop our customer base and will translate into increased revenue for the venture. Our Vision


We are aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing more flexible and affordable sustainable transport alternatives to better meet the needs of the market.

 

Our solution will likely reach at least 50% of the transport community, including individual commuters and company bodies.

 

Initially we are targeting the local ACT market and would branch interstate as the next phase. The solution we are offering is globally applicable, but it demands an in depth resource requirement evaluation before global viability could be justified. We definitely see a market for our solution in developing countries which have set a national greenhouse gas emission reduction target.

 

We see a market for our solution in the individual transport sectors well as the company fleet market, and the vehicle hiring market. We are also evaluating potential value added services such as electric vehicle maintenance & servicing, specialty consulting services, residential integration of electric vehicle for smart energy management, specialised component distribution and component technical support.

The Customer Experience

Customers will be able to interact with our venture by visiting our shop-front style workshop, where they can experience our completed products and learn more about our services. Our online presence will provide a channel for potential customers to contact us via social media and our website.

 

We will utilise social media and to create awareness of our products and services and direct customers to our website where they can learn more about our venture. A launch event will be held to mark the opening of our shop-front style workshop, and as a way to increase our customer reach and brand awareness.

 

The shop-front style workshop provides a customer-friendly atmosphere and doubles as a workshop, providing an insight into the services we provide and the products we develop.

 

By maintaining constant communication throughout the design and development process we aim to keep our customers informed and make them feel like an integral part of the process.

 

Upon the provision of our service to customers we aim to maintain our relationship post transaction by providing various feedback channels on our social media platforms and website, and by offering various after care services for their product. By maintaining good communication and fostering good relationships with our customers we hope to increase our brand awareness and develop our public image.

Funding Sought

We are using a tiered approach when defining the costs for our venture. The first tier comprises a lean start-up cost, detailing the bare essentials for establishing our venture and highlighting our existence in the market. This includes the development of a prototype for demonstrative purposes, marketing and promotion costs, and essential administrative set-up costs.

The second tier focuses on accelerated growth with costs allocated to producing a more refined prototype and a larger allowance for promotion and marketing with the intention of rapidly increasing our exposure and growing our customer base. A launch event will be utilised to maximise exposure and encourage public participation.

The third tier encompasses the ongoing costs and long term goals of the venture including a work-shopfront for increased customer engagement and community presence.  This third tier will only be initiated once our customer demand has outgrown our domestic workshop and our revenue can support the costs of up-scaling our venture.

Our venture would benefit greatly from the funding of Tier 1, and more so from the funding of Tier 2. All amounts received additional to the total of Tier 1 would benefit our venture. These amounts would be allocated to the scalable inclusions such as our marketing strategy, prototype refinement and website development.

The nature of our venture means that we must source equipment and services based on the individual technical and budget constraints for each build.  As such we will be constantly refining our our engagements.  The below list contains some of the equipment and service providers that we believe will be our main trading partners as they either provide specialised product/service that meets our strict requirements or they have proven to be reliable and beneficial to our business.

  • Ginninderry (Riverview Projects) – Collaborative partnership providing a platform for promotion and educational workshops.
  • Ballarat eBikes – Reliable Australian component distributor.
  • Golden Motors – Reliable manufacturer.
  • AKZ Vehicle Engineering – John Wilson is an engineering signatory recognised by the ACT government and throughout Australia. He is the most experienced in the Canberra region at certificating vehicles that have been modified to all electric drive train for road legal use and registration.
  • Sebastian Hogan – A licensed electrician who we have partnered with to provide installation of EV chargers for our customers.

Capturing Value

Our target customer base includes three demographics of vehicle owners in the ACT and Canberra region:

  • The environmentally conscious
  • The cost conscious
  • Those that require a unique vehicle for a specific function and/or particular aesthetics.

As these demographics are quite different in nature, the value we offer to each customer segment is unique. Customers that align with more than one of these categories will find increased value in our venture, and it is these customers that we anticipate will likely be the early adopters of our products and services. To best engage with our customers, we have identified the values we can provide to each demographic.



The Environmentally Conscious


We offer value by enabling the customer to reduce their carbon emissions from transport via electric vehicle (EV) technology. This customer can eliminate the environmental impact of their vehicle by charging via new or existing domestic PV systems or by simply charging their car within the ACT after the year 2020, as Canberra moves towards 100% renewable power. The second benefit that we provide to this demographic is through the reduced environmental impact associated with re-using existing vehicles instead of manufacturing EVs from new materials.




The Cost Conscious


We provide the benefit of EV ownership for significantly lower cost than current OEM EVs. This is achieved by:

  • Vehicle design and manufacturing costs are eliminated by re-using existing conventional vehicles as the foundation.
  • The EV’s performance can be matched to the customer’s individual needs and budget.
  • The EV’s range can be accurately matched to the driver’s distance requirements, and therefore avoid oversizing components and reducing overall costs.

The cost conscious customer also enjoys the benefits of reduced ongoing costs via:

  • Significantly reduced ‘fuel’ bill.
  • The ability to reduce running costs using solar PV systems or off-peak electricity tariffs.
  • Reduced maintenance costs, as electric motors have less moving parts, are more robust and cheaper to replace or repair compared with internal combustion engines.


The Unique Market


We provide value to this customer segment by offering a large range of EV options to suit multiple functionality and aesthetic requirements. The current EVs available on the market are both limited in style and function, all serving a similar purpose as small to mid-sized sedans.

We offer particular value to customers with needs outside what is being met by currently available OEM EV options. Some examples include:

  • Customers that require commercial style vehicles (van, ute or truck).
  • Customers that have or want a project / restoration / classic / or unique vehicle.
  • Customers who ride motorcycles and scooters.


Payment


Payment will be ‘one-off’ however, we provide flexible payment options including:

  • Total up-front payment.
  • Two-part payment with a deposit and remaining balance payment upon delivery.
  • Deposit with multiple instalments.

These options allow us to better cater for our customer’s financial needs, and incentivise the payment options which benefit our venture. We aim for the venture to get to the point where we can have ‘floor stock’ of already completed vehicles that we find are the most desired, that we can sell immediately to walk in customers.

 

As we are providing a unique solution to each customer with differing budgets, the price point is quite variable. We are able to provide a completed electric motorcycle starting from $6,000 AUD and an electric car starting from $15,000 AUD. These prices are calculated on the cost price of components and required labour. As demand increases we will increase the margin to fuel business growth.

When compared with current OEM EV prices, we offer a significantly cheaper option which not only competes with the OEM EV market, but increases our prospective market to those that cannot afford OEM EVs. These prices are also competitive with the second hand conventional vehicle market, which extends our prospective market base.
